Under the theme “We Want +”, developed by creative agency Talent, the festival celebrates the desire to expand horizons, voices, bodies, and imaginaries (in Portuguese, the symbol “+” means both more and plus, evoking an idea of expansion, positivity, and connection). This year’s edition unfolds amid major challenges for Brazilian culture and the LGBT+ community, marked by a scarcity of public and private investment and by setbacks that still echo on many fronts.

Even in this adverse scenario, MixBrasil continues to grow. This year, there were 545 Brazilian films submitted, the largest number in the festival’s history, a sign of the vitality and creative power of our independent audiovisual scene. Bringing together 138 films from 33 countries, MixBrasil strengthens its role as a meeting ground for languages, bodies, and narratives — a reflection of the aesthetic and political diversity of our time.

One of the great innovations of this edition is the Artificial Intelligence Showcase, which brings together 24 films produced with AI tools, a pioneering and unprecedented section that reflects the radical transformation that new technologies bring to audiovisual languages and production methods. A total of 75 works from 14 countries were submitted, and the final selection offers a critical and poetic perspective on the presence of AI in cinematic creation. The showcase also includes a special selection from FIVIA (Festival International du Vidéo et de l’Intelligence Artificielle, from Marseille), fostering a deeper dialogue between technological innovation and diversity of gender, sexuality, and expression.

The festival also celebrates international collaboration in a year with fewer resources in Brazil. This cooperation made a powerful edition possible, bosted by the support of various European cultural institutions, especially from France through its integration with the France–Brazil Season 2025. Within this dialogue, Mundo Mix pays tribute to Poland, a country that, like Brazil, recently experienced a period of resistance under a far-right government, a parallel that reinforces the political and cultural dimension of art as a tool of freedom.

Mix.XR, a program exploring the intersections of art, technology, and queer imagination, presented in collaboration with MixGames, was recognized this year with the WSA Brasil Award (part of the global World Summit Awards network linked to the United Nations) in the Culture and Heritage category. With this recognition, the section stands out in its fourth edition as one of the largest and most diverse program of LGBTQIA+ immersive experiences in the world. This year it presents eight works that expand the boundaries between performance, AI, and virtual reality, including five VR experiences, two immersive performances, and a dome installation—Kancícà, a sensorial creation combining African heritage, technology, and spirituality.

Dramática, our theater section, returns in grand style with eight original productions that reaffirm the power of the contemporary queer stage. Visual Arts gain their largest space in over three decades of the festival, with the exhibition Kwir Nou Exist about the trans community of Réunion Island, the encounter between the collectives Depois do Fim da Arte and Realidades da Galeria Vermelho, and the exhibition curated by Vórtice Cultural at the Museu da Diversidade Sexual.

Marisa Orth, a longtime MixBrasil partner and presenter of the iconic Show do Gongo since 1999, is this year’s honoree, receiving the Ícone Mix Award 2025. Her career embodies humor, intelligence, and courage. She joins the distinguished list of past honorees: Gus Van Sant, João Nery, Marina Lima, Márcia Pantera, Ney Matogrosso, Linn da Quebrada, Renata Carvalho and Bruce LaBruce.

With the support of institutional partners and the dedication of a team driven by passion, the 33+ MixBrasil Festival celebrates not only continuity but expansion: we want more stories told, more bodies represented, more possible worlds imagined.

Because We Want +: more freedom, more presence, and more possibilities for our future.

Welcome to 33+ MixBrasil Festival We Want + As it celebrates its 33rd edition, MixBrasil Culture of Diversity Festival reaffirms its vocation as a platform that goes beyond resistance.
