Mix Icon

Renata Carvalho

In 2017, the Mix Icon Award was created, to honor important journeys of those who have changed the course of the LGBT+ history and representation, and who is somehow related to Mix Brasil Festival. Filmmaker Gus Van Sant, writer and transgender activist João Nery, Marina Lima, celebrating her 40-year career, hair-flipping creator Marcia Pantera, Ney Matogrosso in his 80 years of youth, and, last year the fully complete Linn da Quebrada have already been honored with this award. This year we’ll be paying homage to an actress, director, playwright, transpologist, an iconic figure who transcends the stage and the screen boundaries.

Right here, at Mix Brasil we have already had the honor to receive two of her plays on Dramática theatrical stages: “The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven” in 2016 and her “Transpophagic Manifesto” in 2020, the same year she played the role of Paula Astorga, a factory worker, on the screen in the feature film “Dry Wind”. Now, at the 31st Mix Brasil Festival, she’ll be present in two short films included in the program: “Dinho” and “Pedro Had a Horse” — this one, part of the Shorts Competition.

She’s an active LGBT+ rights defender and a powerful voice in the struggle against discrimination and prejudice. Her fearless work has been contributing to raise visibility and understanding on gender issues, a powerful presence on the fight for equality and diversity, who brings her talent to pave the way and inspire.
Renata Carvalho is our Mix Icon 2023.
