Kancícà is an immersive experience within a 360° dome created by Laeïla Adjovi and Joséphine Derobe (who presented Bear, Deer, Cat and Other Beasts at last year’s edition), featuring an original soundtrack by Tiganá Santana. This piece poetically and sensorially reconstructs the mythical journey of Dotou, a young cartographer and vodun priestess who crosses the Atlantic in search of the exiled queen Na Agontimé, a historical figure from the Kingdom of Danxomè (present-day Benin) deported to Brazil in the 18th century.
Between Africa and Brazil, spirituality and memory, Kancícà — a word in Fongbe meaning “link” — proposes a physical and symbolic passage exploring the bonds between Afro-descendant cultures and the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. Blending animation, shadow theatre, music, and immersive projections, the experience transforms the dome into a contemporary “ritual-space,” where sound, image, and body evoke the invisible ties between worlds.
Produced by MansA (France) and Dream Feel Factory, the work brings together artists from Benin, Brazil, and France, merging historical research, technology, and spirituality into a narrative about resistance, syncretism, and the re-enchantment of Afro-Atlantic memories.
