Bruce LaBruce
In 2017, MixBrasil created the Ícone Mix Award to celebrate the journeys of individuals who transform LGBT+ history and representation, especially those who have a meaningful connection with the festival. Since then, Gus Van Sant, João Nery, Marina Lima, Márcia Pantera, Ney Matogrosso, Linn da Quebrada, and Renata Carvalho have received this honor for their cultural impact and activism.
This year, we are proud to recognize the filmmaker Bruce LaBruce as our Mix Icon. Known worldwide for his transgressive and provocative work, LaBruce is one of the leading figures in queer punk cinema, addressing in his productions themes like desire, subversion, and sexual freedom. His raw and daring cinematic style has broken barriers and redefined LGBT+ cinema by exploring eroticism and nonconformity with a unique, challenging aesthetic.
Bruce LaBruce’s works have been showcased in multiple editions of MixBrasil, always leaving a profound and inspiring mark. This year, in addition to screening his latest film, “The Visitor/O Intruso”, MIS presents the exhibition “Bruce LaBruce: Uncensored” and LaBruce will perform a DJ set at a party in his honor at Galeria Vermelho.
His career challenges the normative system and gives voice to queer rebellion. LaBruce is a true icon of resilience and celebration of diversity. Through his art, he defies prejudice and expands the boundaries of LGBT+ representation, showing that the audiovisual space is for all bodies, all identities, and all forms of love.
